Gauteng is leading Africa’s data-centre investment boom

South Africa’s financial and commercial hub is building a powerful digital ecosystem.

Gauteng has emerged as Africa’s leading destination for data-centre investment, supported by a concentration of digital infrastructure, strong business demand and growing investor confidence in the province’s digital economy. As businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-driven technologies, Gauteng is attracting the investments needed to power the next generation of economic growth.

The province already hosts an estimated 35 to 40 of South Africa’s 55 operational data centres, accounting for approximately 70% of the country’s installed data-centre capacity. Combined with Gauteng’s status as South Africa’s financial and commercial hub, this has created a powerful ecosystem that continues to attract investment into digital infrastructure.

Investment signals growing confidence

The strength of Gauteng’s investment proposition is increasingly evident in foreign-direct investment (FDI) trends. Between January and April 2026, communications infrastructure attracted R634-million in FDI, representing 54% of all FDI announced in Gauteng during the period. The largest investment came from Equinix, which committed R574-million towards expanding its digital infrastructure footprint in the province.

These investments reflect growing demand for secure data storage, cloud services, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence infrastructure. They also reinforce Gauteng’s attractiveness as a location where investors can access established markets, skilled talent and the infrastructure required to support digital business operations.

Further evidence of this momentum can be seen in Cassava Technologies’ R1.75-billion commitment to Gauteng, part of a wider R3.6-billion national investment programme. Anchored by its Tier IV Africa Data Centres campus in Midrand, the investment will expand fibre networks, increase data-centre capacity and strengthen AI computing capabilities.

Building the infrastructure of the future

While data centres are often viewed as technology infrastructure, their economic impact extends far beyond the facilities themselves. They provide the foundation for industries such as fintech, digital banking, software development, artificial intelligence, digital media and advanced manufacturing. Every investment in digital infrastructure strengthens Gauteng’s ability to attract new businesses, support innovation and improve competitiveness.

These investments reflect growing demand for secure data storage, cloud services, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Africa currently accounts for just 0.6% of global data-centre capacity, highlighting significant room for expansion across the continent. Gauteng’s existing infrastructure base, concentration of enterprise customers and growing pipeline of digital investments position the province to capture a substantial share of this future growth.

As demand for digital services continues to accelerate, Gauteng’s leadership in data-centre infrastructure is becoming an increasingly important economic advantage. More importantly, the investments flowing into the sector demonstrate that Gauteng is not only South Africa’s digital hub but is increasingly establishing itself as Africa’s preferred destination for digital infrastructure investment.
