The GH2 Hub of Western SADC
The Northern Cape has intrinsic advantages that position it as the ideal centre of a national green hydrogen ecosystem.
Green hydrogen has several downstream use cases, that could contribute towards the development of new industries in the Northern Cape and enable the re-industrialization of industries nationally.
This is in addition to the global export market where offtake demand has greater certainty.
The development of the Boegoebaai Special Economic Zone requires a careful balance between industrialisation and ecological preservation. A Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) has been initiated through a collaboration involving the Northern Cape Economic Development Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (NCEDA), South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been asked to undertake the SEA. This can be found here.
