The South African raisin industry is a proud and historic agricultural sector, rooted in humble beginnings along the fertile riverbanks of the Orange and Olifantsriver. Over decades of innovation, investment and commitment to quality, the industry has evolved into a respected global player.
Today, South Africa is recognised for producing some of the world’s finest raisins, prized for their superior quality, natural sweetness, and consistency. As the world’s fifth-largest exporter of raisins, South Africa exports more than 88% of its total raisin crop to premium international markets, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable supplier of high-value dried fruit.

The industry is well organised and collectively represented by its commodity organisation, Raisins South Africa, which plays a central role in industry coordination, market development and sustainability initiatives.
In total, 773 dedicated growers operate across two main production regions, combining generations of farming expertise with modern production practices. Their produce is processed, packaged and exported through nine specialised processing facilities that meet stringent international food safety and quality standards.
Together, this integrated value chain positions the South African raisin industry as a competitive, export-driven sector and a key contributor to agricultural growth, rural development, and international trade.
