One province, two world-class SEZs, unlimited investment opportunities

Home to the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) and Coega SEZ, the Eastern Cape remains at the forefront of South Africa's SEZ programme. Together, the two entities have attracted more than R22-billion in private sector investment since inception.

The recent International SEZ Infrastructure and Investment Conference brought together investors, policymakers, industry leaders and development partners to engage on the future of industrialisation, infrastructure development and investment promotion in South Africa.

Led by MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, the Eastern Cape delegation participated in key discussions shaping the future of Special Economic Zones as catalysts for industrial growth, competitiveness and investment attraction.

Home to the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) and Coega SEZ, the Eastern Cape remains at the forefront of South Africa’s SEZ programme. Together, the two entities have attracted more than R22-billion in private sector investment since inception, providing compelling evidence of the role SEZs can play in driving industrial development, export growth and job creation.

A distinguishing feature of the province’s investment proposition is the ELIDZ’s integrated Science and Technology Park (STP), the only Special Economic Zone in South Africa with an embedded innovation ecosystem that directly links research, technology development, enterprise support and industrialisation. This unique model enables the province to support investors across the innovation value chain, from concept and product development through to commercialisation and advanced manufacturing.

As conversations continue on the future of Special Economic Zones, the Eastern Cape remains a practical example of how strategic infrastructure, innovation, investor confidence and institutional leadership can translate into measurable economic outcomes.

The Eastern Cape is not only contributing to South Africa’s industrialisation journey, it is helping to define what success looks like.

About East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ)

The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) is a prime industrial site in South Africa. It is geographically designated and positioned for specialised industrial activity. The ELIDZ was one of the first IDZs in South Africa to be awarded a provisional operator’s licence in September 2002.

Serving as a global model for eco-industrial parks, the ELIDZ epitomises innovation, infrastructure, and skills development as crucial elements for unlocking economic opportunities, not only in South Africa but worldwide.
