Amathole District Municipality (ADM), in partnership with its development agency, ASPIRE, will commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day by rehabilitating Dalubuhle High School in Sheshegu, Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, as part of the global 67 Minutes for Mandela campaign. This year’s Mandela Day is observed under the theme: “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”
The initiative aims to restore and improve the school’s learning environment through a range of rehabilitation activities, including painting, flooring installation and a general clean-up of the school premises to create a safer, cleaner and more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The programme builds on ADM’s Back-to-School Campaign held on 16 March 2026, during which Executive Mayor Cllr. Anele Ntsangani donated 40 school bags, 40 pairs of school shoes and sanitary towels to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. During the back to school visit, the Executive Mayor announced the municipality’s adoption of Dalubuhle High School following concerns over deteriorating infrastructure and acts of vandalism affecting the school.
Despite these challenges, Dalubuhle High School has continued to demonstrate remarkable academic excellence, achieving a 100% matric pass rate in both 2023 and 2024, while recording an impressive 95.2% pass rate in the previous academic year. The rehabilitation programme will bring together representatives from the Eastern Cape Department of Education, the School Governing Body, parents, ward councillors, traditional leaders, community members and other stakeholders in the spirit of community service and collective action.
