The transformation of Durban’s western corridor reached another significant milestone on 28 September with the sod-turning ceremony for the new R1.3-billion Farrier Business Park, an 80 000m² warehousing and logistics development that forms part of the broader Westown development in Shongweni.
The event marked the latest phase in the rapidly growing Westown precinct, a flagship project within the Shongweni Urban Development, which is being delivered through a public-private partnership between the eThekwini Municipality and Fundamentum Property Group.
The long-term development programme is expected to attract more than R15-billion in investment and reshape the region into a major economic and logistics hub.
Addressing stakeholders at the ceremony, eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba said the project demonstrates growing investor confidence in Durban and the City’s commitment to economic growth and spatial transformation.
“Today, we turn the sod for Farrier Business Park. This confirms that the City is serious about addressing the fragmented spatial patterns created by apartheid. It also demonstrates our commitment to growing the city’s economy and creating sustainable employment opportunities,” said Mayor Xaba.
“As the City, we have invested close to R600-million in bulk infrastructure to support Westown. This investment has also enabled Farrier Business Park and other developments in the area. These efforts are aimed at sustaining improvements in job creation. They are also intended to sustainably address poverty, inequality, and advance inclusive, developmental economic growth. As the City, we will continue to forge public-private partnerships that transform our spatial landscape and elevate eThekwini as a destination of choice.”
Located just 1.5 kilometres from the N3 via the Shongweni Interchange and 30 kilometres from the Port of Durban, Farrier Business Park is strategically positioned to serve businesses seeking efficient access to regional and national logistics networks.
The development will offer serviced sites, sectional-title units and bespoke rental solutions, providing flexibility for a range of business and investment needs.
Carlos Correia, CEO of Fundamentum Development Company, said the project signals the next stage of Westown’s evolution.
