Amathole Rural Oceans Economy Indaba closes with renewed commitments to unlock coastal opportunities

Opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture, marine transport and logistics, coastal tourism, oil and gas exploration and renewable energy were highlighted as key drivers of economic transformation.

The Amathole District Municipality, through its Local Economic Development Directorate, successfully concluded its two-day Amathole Rural Oceans Economy Indaba under the theme “Unlocking Coastal Opportunities: Partnerships for Community Growth.”

Hosted at Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth, the Indaba brought together a diverse range of stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, and local communities, all united by a shared vision to harness the vast potential of the oceans economy for sustainable development and community beneficiation.

The gathering was marked by meaningful dialogue and renewed commitments to collaboration. Leaders from across the district emphasized that the oceans economy represents one of the most promising frontiers for growth in the Eastern Cape, particularly in the Amathole coastal region.

Opportunities in fisheries and aquaculture, marine transport and logistics, coastal tourism, oil and gas exploration and renewable energy were highlighted as key drivers of economic transformation. These sectors, if strategically developed, hold the potential to create jobs, stimulate enterprise development, and ensure that local communities benefit directly from the wealth of resources along the coastline.

The programme underscored the importance of inclusive participation and the need to position the Amathole region as a central player in the oceans economy. In his keynote address, the National Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Hon. Narend Singh, stressed the urgency of building strategic partnerships, investing in skills development, and strengthening funding opportunities to ensure that communities are not left behind in this emerging sector.

Stakeholders such as the Eastern Cape Socio-Economic Consultative Council (ECSECC), Amathole Economic Development Agency (ASPIRE), SAMSA, PASA, TETA, SAIMI, SEDFA, SANOJ Solutions, and several government departments contributed valuable insights.

ASPIRE, in particular, was commended for its proactive approach in facilitating community-based engagements on oil and gas exploration, following its appointment by Impact Africa. These sessions were conducted directly within communities rather than in boardrooms, ensuring that knowledge-sharing was voluntary, accessible and empowering for residents.

The role of municipalities was reaffirmed as critical in driving inclusive local economic development. By championing skills development, supporting cooperatives, and fostering enterprise creation, municipalities within ADM committed to ensuring that oceans economy initiatives translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.

The presence of community cooperatives such as Siyazama Cooperative further demonstrated the importance of grassroots involvement in shaping the future of the sector.

As the Indaba drew to a close, stakeholders pledged to strengthen collaboration, develop clear action plans and position the Amathole region as a leading hub for oceans economy opportunities in the Eastern Cape.

The renewed commitments made during the two-day programme reflect a collective determination to unlock coastal opportunities, build sustainable partnerships, and ensure that the oceans economy becomes a catalyst for community growth and prosperity.

ASPIRE was founded as the Amathole Economic Development Agency (AEDA). The role of ASPIRE is to assist the Amathole District Municipality in attaining its vision and to support a mission that specifically spells out the participatory nature of the development process.
