Women who lead. Women who innovate. Women who inspire

Every August, South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, a time to honour the courage, resilience and achievements of the women who have shaped our nation’s history and continue to build our future.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and renew our commitment to creating a society where every woman can realise her full potential.

This year marks 70 years since more than 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to protest the extension of apartheid pass laws to women. Their bravery gave rise to one of South Africa’s most enduring rally cries: Wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo (You strike a woman, you strike a rock). Their actions became a defining moment in our country’s struggle for justice, equality and human dignity.

The legacy of those remarkable women continues to inspire us. Their fight was about far more than opposing unjust laws; it was about demanding equal opportunity, recognition and the right to participate fully in shaping South Africa’s future. While our democracy has made significant progress, their example reminds us that the pursuit of equality is ongoing and requires sustained commitment from all of us.

Today, women are driving South Africa’s development across every sector of society. They are leading businesses, advancing scientific research, educating future generations, strengthening communities, providing healthcare, building successful enterprises and shaping public policy. Their leadership, resilience and innovation continue to strengthen our economy and enrich our democracy.

As the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, we recognise that the digital economy presents one of the greatest opportunities to accelerate women’s empowerment. Digital technologies are transforming how we learn, work, communicate and do business. Ensuring that women and girls are not only participants, but leaders in this transformation is essential to building an inclusive, innovative and competitive economy.

South Africa is fortunate to have a growing number of trailblazing women across the ICT sector whose leadership continues to inspire. Whether in government, academia, the private sector or entrepreneurship, these pioneers are advancing digital innovation, expanding connectivity, strengthening cybersecurity, shaping emerging technologies and driving digital inclusion. They are leading organisations, influencing policy, developing innovative solutions and demonstrating every day that innovation knows no gender. Their success is inspiring a new generation of young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while proving that diversity is fundamental to innovation and sustainable growth.

Yet the barriers remain. Too many women face unfair access to economic opportunities, funding, leadership positions and digital skills. Gender-based violence, unequal pay and the continued under-representation of women in STEM professions limit the full participation of women in our economy and society.

Overcoming these challenges demands collective action. Government, business, academia, civil society and communities must work together to expand access to quality education, strengthen digital literacy, invest in women-owned enterprises and create workplaces that value diversity and inclusion. We must also ensure that the benefits of digital transformation reach women in rural communities, townships and underserved areas so that no-one is left behind.

Equally important is the role of mentorship. Every woman who has broken barriers has the power to inspire another. By sharing knowledge, creating opportunities and opening doors, today’s leaders can help cultivate a new generation of women who will drive South Africa’s digital and economic future.

Women’s Month also reminds us to celebrate the countless women whose contributions go unnoticed. Teachers, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, public servants, caregivers and mothers continue to build stronger families and communities every day. Their dedication may not always make headlines, but it is fundamental to our nation’s progress.

As we commemorate Women’s Month, let us remember that celebrating women cannot be confined to one month on the calendar. Equality, dignity, respect and empowerment must guide our decisions and actions throughout the year. Our success will ultimately be measured not only by the number of women in leadership, but by whether every girl and every woman has a fair opportunity to learn, innovate, lead and succeed.

South Africa’s future depends on unlocking the full potential of all its people, and that future cannot be realised without the full participation of women. By investing in women’s education, digital skills, leadership and entrepreneurship, we invest in stronger families, more resilient communities and an inclusive, innovative and prosperous South Africa.

This Women’s Month, let us honour the pioneers who came before us, celebrate the women who continue to break barriers today and recommit ourselves to building a country where every woman can thrive, contribute and leave a legacy for generations to come.
