Green economy initiatives
As the Just Energy Transition gathers pace, investors have a wide choice of projects.
A provincial goal is to grow an inclusive green economy that fosters a sustainable environment and low-carbon economy. To this end, the following programmes are being pursued:
- Circular economy initiatives that focus on an Industrial Symbiosis programme. This includes, among other things, waste recycling, renewable-energy production and other similar initiatives.
- The Just Energy Transition programme that focuses on transitioning from coal to gas energy generation and the capturing of carbon from the emissions of power stations and other related energy-generation projects.
- Utilization of mine water to support initiatives in rehabilitated land of derelict and closed out mines for agricultural use.
- Biomass, solar and wind initiatives to support the Renewable Energy Programme.

About the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency
The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency is a not-for-profit organisation registered in South Africa. The Cluster uses the triple-helix-cluster model with representation from government, industry and academia as part of its design setup.
The cluster works at the interface between business, government and academia to identify and remove barriers to an economically viable green economy, catalysing their uptake to enable the region and its citizens to prosper.
Mpumalanga is a world-leading region in creating decent, green jobs by creating the enabling environment for new investments in low-carbon growth.
Seriti Green, in partnership with Eskom and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), officially handed over the Vunumoya Main Transmission Station (MTS) in November 2025, marking a milestone in the transition to green energy in the province.
Seriti Green’s Ummbila Emoyeni hybrid renewable-energy facility will add 900MW to the grid once all the phases are complete.
