Ethekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, together with National Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille, Deputy Tourism Minister Makhotso Sotyu, and Durban Metro Police Service Commissioner S.W. Mchunu today officially launched the Durban Metro Police Coastal Tourist Policing Unit.
The Commissioner expressed his excitement and pride that Durban Metro Police has become the first Metro Police Service in South Africa to introduce a dedicated policing unit focused specifically on tourist safety and coastal law enforcement.
The specialised unit will operate along the coastline from uThongathi to uMkhomazi, focusing on ensuring the safety and security of tourists, visitors, and residents while improving visible policing along the beachfront and coastal areas.
In addition to tourist safety, the unit will also enforce relevant by-laws and marine-related regulations, including action against illegal and unlicensed fishing activities, as well as the catching of prohibited fish species along the coastline.
As part of this important partnership, the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) donated vehicles to Durban Metro Police to support the operations of the newly launched Coastal Tourist Policing Unit. The donation will strengthen mobility, visibility, and rapid response capabilities along Durban’s coastline.
The unit will also play a critical role in assisting tourists who become victims of crime, are lost, stranded, robbed, or require emergency assistance while visiting Durban. Members will provide rapid response, guidance, victim support, assistance with opening criminal cases, liaison with relevant emergency services, and help tourists safely access accommodation, medical facilities, transport hubs, and consulates where necessary. This initiative aims to improve visitor confidence and ensure tourists feel protected and supported while enjoying Durban’s attractions.
This Public Private Partnership forms part of the broader initiatives driven through the Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG), aimed at improving safety, boosting tourism confidence, and supporting economic growth within the City.
Durban Metro Police remains committed to innovative policing, protecting the City’s tourism economy, preserving marine resources, and ensuring Durban remains a safe and welcoming destination for all.
