Africa’s rail future takes centre stage at SARA Rail 2026
The future of Africa’s railway sector will come under the spotlight in Johannesburg this October as industry leaders gather for the 15th Annual SARA Rail Conference and Exhibition.
Taking place from 20 to 23 October at the Sandton Convention Centre, the conference will bring together railway operators, government representatives, investors, infrastructure developers, manufacturers and technology companies to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the sector.
Hosted by the Southern African Railways Association (SARA), this year’s conference will focus on “Reimagining Rail: Unlocking Investment and Industrialisation for Growth & Connectivity Across Africa.”
The focus comes as countries across the continent look to strengthen rail infrastructure and regional corridors while improving the movement of goods and supporting industrial growth.
For Southern Africa, much of the conversation is centred on investment. Ageing infrastructure, rolling stock requirements and the need for more efficient cross-border networks continue to create challenges, but they also present opportunities for new investment and partnerships.
The conference will explore how governments and the private sector can work together to move projects from planning to implementation, including through investment frameworks and public-private partnerships.
Regional connectivity will also feature strongly, particularly the development of SADC corridors and the need to improve the movement of freight across borders. Discussions will look at what is needed to move these corridors from strategy to actual throughput.
Technology and digitalisation are expected to form another part of the conversation as the industry looks at ways to improve railway efficiency, safety and performance.
The event will also provide an opportunity for companies across the railway value chain to showcase their products and services during the exhibition, while creating space for networking and new business opportunities.
As Africa looks to strengthen trade links and build more integrated regional economies, rail is increasingly being viewed as an important part of that picture.
SARA Rail 2026 will provide an opportunity for the industry to come together and consider what is needed to turn that potential into functioning infrastructure, stronger corridors and sustainable growth.
