Over the past year, the GTP has worked closely with the City of Cape Town, the Voortrekker Road CID, and local partners to steadily improve the experience of moving through and spending time in the CBD.
The official opening of the Kruskal Avenue upgrade — celebrated with Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews and the City of Cape Town — is one of several public-space improvements delivered in the precinct.
Key upgrades on Kruskal include:
- Wider walkways and safer pedestrian flow
- Modern lighting for improved visibility
- 78 new trees and upgraded landscaping
- One-level shared street design
- New amenities that support access and comfort
- Improved loading and service circulation
Together, these upgrades support the GTP’s long-term placemaking approach:
-
- Prioritising people in public space
- Improving walkability and safety
- Strengthening connections between key destinations
- Building pride and confidence in the CBD
- Creating environments that support local business and community life
GTP CEO, Warren Hewitt, highlighted this perspective at the recent launch of the Kruskal Avenue upgrade in Bellville. With its focus on pedestrian movement, greening and accessibility, the project demonstrates how thoughtful urban design can support economic activity and strengthen the identity of the Bellville CBD.
Placemaking isn’t just construction; it’s about harnessing the power of place to improve and invigorate communities. – Warren Hewitt
As partners in the precinct, we remain committed to initiatives that make our urban centres safer, more connected and highly functional.
We look forward to continuing this work with the City of Cape Town, VRCID and our stakeholders — project by project, block by block — as we help shape a CBD that works better for everyone.
