Community members receive e-waste recycling training in Bellville

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership is equipping local reclaimers and community members with future-fit skills that sit at the intersection of environmental stewardship, green job creation, and inclusive economic growth.

This week, The Greater Tygerberg Partnership advanced an important pillar of Bellville’s circular economy by hosting e-waste dismantling and repair training at our Buy-Back Centre, in partnership with ERANPC (E-waste Recycling Authority) and Taking Care of Business.

For us, this is more than technical training — it’s ecosystem building.

We are equipping local reclaimers and community members with future-fit skills that sit at the intersection of environmental stewardship, green job creation, and inclusive economic growth. When communities gain the ability to safely dismantle, sort, and repair e-waste, the value chain strengthens from the ground up.

The global context makes this work non-negotiable:

  • The world generated 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022
  • Only 22% was formally recycled
  • E-waste volumes are growing five times faster than recycling rates
  • In South Africa, e-waste is growing three times faster than other municipal waste streams

These numbers tell a simple truth: cities that invest in repair, reuse, and responsible recovery will be the ones that build resilient, low-carbon economies.

Our theme for 2025 captures the shift we’re driving: “Don’t Trash It – Reuse, Repair, Recycle!”

We’ll be unveiling our full e-waste campaign on 28 Nov.

Watch our channels for the rollout — and for how Bellville is redefining what a community-led circular system can look like. Follow The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) on LinkedIn or Facebook or visit https://gtp.org.za/
