The community of Inanda Newtown in KwaZulu-Natal, including the local taxi association, has lauded the municipality for prioritising the reconstruction of King Bhekuzulu Road and upgrading the stormwater system in Inanda, Ward 56.
These projects form part of several planned initiatives to improve infrastructure following the approval by National Treasury to allow the Municipality to rollover the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant.
The feedback from residents followed an oversight visit by eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda to the area today, 23 November. The comprehensive oversight visit aimed to assess the progress and development of critical infrastructure projects in Inanda.
Mayor Kaunda was impressed with the work done so far to upgrade King Bhekuzulu Road as well as the stormwater systems.
“This upgrade is one of 500 projects that will be undertaken with the R1.6-billion we have received from the Municipal Disaster Recovery Grant. These projects include bridges and road and stormwater systems which were previously damaged during the recent floods,” said Mayor Kaunda.
The two projects are expected to be completed by early 2024 and have created over 30 direct jobs for locals. Three local companies were subcontracted, which will create additional jobs for locals.
In addition to the road inspection, Mayor Kaunda also assessed stormwater projects which aim to address drainage issues and mitigate the impact of heavy traffic. This will play a crucial role in safeguarding public spaces, preventing flooding, and promoting environmental sustainability.
During his visit, Mayor Kaunda reiterated the City’s commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that meets the needs of residents.
The oversight visit provided an opportunity for Mayor Kaunda to engage with project stakeholders including engineers, contractors, and community representatives. This collaborative approach aligns with the City’s commitment to ensure inclusivity and community involvement in the decision-making process.
As the projects continue to unfold, Mayor Kaunda has affirmed the City’s dedication to keeping the public informed about the developments as well as timelines and any disruptions.
Deputy Chairperson of SANTACO KZN Sifiso Mthethwa applauded the Municipality for prioritising King Bhekuzulu Road which is a major traffic route that connects locals to various economic nodes.
