Seeking equity partner for development of private hospital

Equity investment partners sought for brownfield development of an acute care private hospital in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape, South Africa. There is a huge demand for private healthcare facilities in the region.

Background

Aliwal North Private Hospital is planned to be a 100-bed private hospital initiative in the provision of acute hospital care services in the greater area of Aliwal North. The hospital will create a significant number of job opportunities and offer investment opportunities for local investors together with training and development structures for its staff and stakeholders to ensure a sustainable investment.

The opportunity to provide a private hospital in the city of Aliwal North will add significantly to the already well-established private hospitals through the provision of services which are supported by the medically insured population in Aliwal North and its surrounding areas. An existing sub-acute facility called Fatima House in Aliwal North with 50 rooms has been targeted as the premises.

Project overview

The site chosen for the hospital has great future development opportunity and expansion possibilities of the existing buildings.

The developer’s vision is one of an acute care hospital that provides quality patient care services in a comfortable and safe environment. The building has 2 floors that contain the following functional facilities:

  • 50 patient beds
  • 2 operating rooms in theatre
  • Central sterilizing and stores department (CSSD)
  • Outpatient unit with ambulance bay
  • Radiology unit with a Bucky unit
  • Pathology unit for phlebotomy
  • Pharmacy servicing in- and out-patients
  • Administration and finance
  • Maintenance and technical services
  • Laundry services
  • Housekeeping and cleaning
  • Catering
  • Medical consulting suites
  • Lifts for vertical movement of patients, staff and public
  • Waiting areas
  • Nursing staff rest rooms
  • General staff restaurant
  • Backup power generator.

Primary Drivers & Investment Proposition

The Eastern Cape is one of the poorer provinces in South Africa. According to the demographic information there are on average approximately 14% of the population that can afford private healthcare. There are probably another 5% to 10% that could enter the private health arena if it was a bit more accessible and especially more affordable. In the Joe Gqabi district no evidence could be found of any private healthcare activity.

There is a huge demand for private healthcare facilities in the region.

Private paying patients are currently seeking healthcare either in Bloemfontein (approximately 215 km north of Aliwal North), or in Queenstown (approximately 165 km south of Aliwal North).
