Lukhanyiso Biogas Plant
1. Opportunity
The Lukhanyiso Food & Energy Centre project provides an opportunity to develop a flagship project that demonstrates the impact of the production of biogas for electricity generation through a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system.
It provides a sustainable solution that harnesses the potential of organic feedstocks for rural economic development, small-scale SME development, and local ownership of the Government’s National Renewable Energy and Rural Development Policies. The Lukhanyiso Biogas Plant is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape in South Africa.
2. Product or Service Offering
The project was designed to generate annual electricity sales of 8.645.919 kWh per year from crops.
3. Target Market
The product is sold to nearby households, including nearby industrial customers who require electricity for on-site use.
4. Feedstock Assessment
The typical feedstock utilised for energy generation comprise crops grown by the farmers at the Lukhanyiso Food & Energy Centre.
5. Technology Type
The project developer adopted a world class Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system.
6. Project Stage
Phase 1 of the project is complete and is awaiting commissioning. The project requires catalytic investment for feedstock supply and water connection, transportation, personnel, equipment supplies and electricity grid connection.
7. Business Model
A Build–Own–Operate–Transfer (BOOT) model was adopted. The project developer has since transferred the plant to the owner.
8. Capital Invested To Date
A total of US$5,383,660 was invested to develop the project. A shortfall is required for items mentioned above. This will be determined after a valuation.
9. Management Team
Lukhanyiso Farmer Producers’ Association and Zero Waste.
