Seeking investors for developing small business owners through accredited programme

The The University of Stellenbosch Small Business Academy Development Programme is a post-matric programme that offers full-time small business owners in the Western and Eastern Cape the opportunity to gain business knowledge that will enable to grow and expand their existing business.

Project Background

Joe Gqabi Economic Development Agency had been in search of a platform in which we could best further the objective of Enterprise Development in the Joe Gqabi region. This path led to the agency forming a strategic partnership with the University of Stellenbosch Small Business Academy (USB SBA) for the implementation of a Small Business Development Programme targeting SMMEs within the district for a period of three years.

The USB SBA Development Programme is a post-matric programme that offers full-time small business owners in the Western and Eastern Cape the opportunity to gain business knowledge that will enable to grow and expand their existing business.

The USB SBA Development Programme is presented on a part-time basis in four block weeks. A certificate from Stellenbosch University is awarded to successful participants. The programme consists of:

  • 12 hours of mentoring,
  • 2 practical workshops,
  • 4 blocks of 1 weeklong training
  • 1 business plan presentation to the SBA’s academic panel

Project overview

The curriculum of the USB SBA Development Programme comprises the following elements: theoretical training, presentation of a business plan, one-on-one mentoring, practical workshops and engaged learning with USB’s master’s student.

  • Training: Modules include Business Essentials, Marketing, Finance, Business Plan (development and presentation), and Computer Skills. Training takes place on a location identified by JoGEDA. SBA faculty and trainers would be flown up for lectures at the cost of JoGEDA.
  • Mentoring: This is provided by USB alumni free of charge. After going through a selection and training process, USB Eastern Cape alumni (mentors) are matched with students on a one-on-one basis. Alumni of the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Business School may be incorporated to join the mentoring programme.
  • Workshops: Regular practical workshops are presented by local role models, experts and volunteers.
  • Engaged learning with USB & NMU students: USB and NMU master’s students assist small business owners with their business plans. In return, USB students do research in the areas where these participants work as part of their degrees.
