Massive Cornubia integrated development underway

It is all systems go for the construction of the landmark Cornubia project which will provide educational, social, health and recreational facilities all in one vicinity.

Construction will begin mid-July, following a sod turning ceremony on 5 July by the Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu, accompanied by provincial government leadership, including Premier Sihle Zikalala, various MEC’s and eThekwini Acting Mayor, Fawzia Peer.

The ceremony was to formally mark the commencement of construction of the project. The development to be undertaken at Cornubia Human Settlements Phase 1 A will see Solomon Mahlangu Primary School, funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, as well as a clinic, a multi-purpose community hall, sports field and linear park being built.

The news that the development is set to soon begin was warmly received by Cornubia residents. The project is expected to create more than 250 construction jobs for the community and 50 sub-contracting business opportunities. Minister Sisulu said: “The Cornubia project forms part of the Strategic Infrastructure Project 7, to ensure that development of housing is aligned to economic development as well as other socio-economic infrastructure.” Premier Zikalala said that by looking at the number of businesses it has attracted, he is pleased that the Cornubia precinct has become a key driver of economic growth.

Acting Mayor Peer said: “We are creating integrated human settlements because we want our residents to reside closer to social amenities and economic opportunities. This solid service delivery is an indication of a responsive government.” Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu said the school, which will have 22 classrooms, will be fully equipped with advanced technology.

Among the facilities that will be part of the school is a media centre, computer room and a kitchen with a student dining area. It was revealed that around 39 000 job opportunities have been created through construction-related activities taking place in the Cornubia node. “This catalytic project aims to retain and attract investments into the inner city of Durban while at the same time addressing spatial functional disparities. In this way, we hope to continue attracting investments from the private sector, particularly in the commercial, retail and residential accommodation space,” said Premier Zikalala.
